This career, they say, is all about who you know; in addition to the first from Oxbridge and the twenty A stars that you have gained.
So if you are a little bit longer in the tooth and there was no such thing as an A star when you did your exams, your father was a toolmaker and your mother a lab technician then what do you do?
The answer is network. This is where the more mature amongst us can have the advantage over the "yoofs" of today.
Get out and meet as many barristers, solicitors, ex students, paralegals, clerks and chambers staff. It has been a revelation to me that the profession is not at all like its reputation, thank goodness!
There are lots of really helpful people out there at all levels of influence, so just be yourself, get out there and get networking.
